What: Crossing the Line – Sobre pasando la linea – 2003 – 96 minutes – A documentary following the struggle of workers in Mexico, the U.S. and Canada against the negative results of free trade.
Why: This documentary looks at what NAFTA hath wrought, from birth defects in Matamoros, Mexico to discarded injured workers in Yakima, Washington and boarded up factories in Waterloo Ontario. And it looks at what workers are doing to fight back. Over a six year period a series of cross-border struggles are followed in the three NAFTA countries. In following them a frank point of view and advocacy are interwoven with layers of evidence. Globalization tips the balance between labor and the corporations; forward looking people in labor are seeking to internationalize the labor movement in order to right the balances. This documentary looks at many of the forms of alliance and solidarity that are being developed to do this and to preserve the rights of workers.
